On May 25 and 26, we walked around the backstreets of Hase, the Gokurakuji area, and the area around Jojuin Temple to check the current blooming status of the hydrangeas.
Overall, they are not yet in full bloom. Most are still in the early blooming stage, with some areas gradually approaching their best viewing period.
Blue, pale purple, and pink hydrangeas are beginning to show their colors, creating a beautiful early summer atmosphere in Kamakura just before the rainy season begins.
Blooming Status as of May 25–26, 2026
The blooming conditions vary depending on the location.
In the backstreets of Hase, hydrangeas are beginning to bloom along residential walls and narrow paths. There are still many buds, so the colors are expected to become richer day by day.
Around Gokurakuji, blue hydrangeas have started to bloom. The fresh green of the trees has grown deeper, creating a beautiful contrast with the soft colors of the hydrangeas.
Near Jojuin Temple, you can enjoy hydrangeas together with views of the sea from the sloping paths. As of late May, the flowers are still in the early stages of blooming, but on sunny days, you can enjoy the scenery of the sea, greenery, and hydrangeas all together.
Hydrangeas in the Backstreets of Hase
The charm of the Hase area is not limited to famous sightseeing spots.
Even in narrow lanes and traditional residential streets, you can find hydrangeas that bring a sense of the season. By walking just a little away from the busy tourist areas, you can discover quiet, peaceful scenery that feels very much like Kamakura.

It seems that the best time to enjoy the hydrangeas in full bloom will be a little later.
As June begins, the colors are expected to deepen, and visitors will be able to enjoy Kamakura’s classic rainy season scenery.
